A capitol policeman has died after being shot in a shootout with a rival group of armed men, police said.
The officers were involved in a standoff with armed men who had been attempting to steal police equipment, including guns, from the Capitol Police office in Washington, D.C. Police say the officers responded by firing their weapons into the air, and that at least one person was struck.
It is not clear whether the other officer is still in critical condition.
In the days leading up to the shootout, authorities were investigating whether the officers involved in the shootout had any ties to the far-right-wing group the Oath Keepers, which has been linked to a string of high-profile shootings in the US.
The group has been involved in several high-level, violent clashes with police in the United States.
The Oath Keepiers have been a key player in a wave of violence in recent years, and some have been charged with terror-related crimes.
It remains unclear how the shootout was started.
Police released no details of the suspects.
It was not immediately clear if the Capitol police officers involved had any prior arrests.
