Why is the NDP spending so much on the border?
The NDP is spending billions of dollars on the wall along the Canada-U.S. border, but its leaders say it’s about more than just border security.
It’s also about jobs, jobs and jobs.
“It’s about our country and our economy and the fact that it’s getting more and more difficult to get the kind of goods that we need to grow the economy,” says NDP Leader Tom Mulcair.
Mulcair says the government has already spent $1.4 billion on the barrier since the end of July.
“We are going to keep going.
It will get better.
It is going to get better,” he says.
Micheal Martin, the minister of federal infrastructure, says the federal government is “very committed to making sure that the barrier is built as fast as possible and that it is the best possible technology and best possible construction.”
Mulray says the barrier will be built as quickly as possible so Canadians can get the goods they need to build a better economy.
“The barriers that are being built are not going to be up and running for another decade or two, but we want to be able to get them out as quickly and safely as possible,” he said.
Meslin says he’s confident the wall will be ready for the 2019 election.
“I am confident that the barriers will be there in time for the election,” he told CBC News.
“This is a matter of a few months, and we’re going to make sure that we’re doing everything possible to make the best of it.”
